Lutry plage

Dear Léman,

I have just arrived in Lutry and walked down to the waterfront. There is that blue of the mountains again — soft, light, suspended in the haze, in the haze of the air.

And yes, I agree: it is an obsession.

Throughout August, I came back far too many times to exactly the same place, without changing my spot at all. There was simply no interest or need to look for somewhere else.

The question keeps coming back to me: “Why am I painting exactly this, exactly here?” This place is in the old harbour — a small path, a pier where fishermen sit with their fishing rods.

Standing on this pier, I see my three layers: water, mountains, and sky. Right now, another memory has surfaced: in Chuvash mythology, there are three worlds — the lower world, the middle world, the world of human beings, and the upper world, the world of the gods.

The middle world is the world of the mountains, the earth, the shore of Lavaux. The lower world is water. I like having all three of these layers present within a single scene.

Seven years ago, I came to Switzerland in September.

Now, I have submitted the grant application I spent the whole summer preparing.

A grant from the Canton of Vaud for artists. For the project, I created a list of 42 locations that I will paint over the course of one year, visiting one location each week. This feels like a huge milestone.

August also brought me a room of my own. Now I live with you, Léman, and see you from my window every day: waking up with you, falling asleep with you.
Today is Monday, September 7th. Here I am again in my favourite spot, where I usually come to paint you, Léman, my dear friend.

Being close to you brings me back to life, especially here, in this little secluded corner away from the passers-by. Once again, I am grateful to you for your endless inspiration.

Do you know what Rothko is famous for?

Those spaces of colour he was trying to create.
Here, what fascinates me most are precisely these planes of colour filling vast expanses: the water, the long band of mountains disappearing into the distance, and the enormous space of sky above.
There is such pleasure in the sheer volume of colour, in its air, and in the light that reveals it.

Catching these transitions of colour through perspective interests me much more than painting houses, people, or any other objects of the human world.

Nature belongs to the divine world, created by God. People are beautiful to paint when they are gathered in groups, in crowds; there is something beautiful and compelling in painting them that way.

Buildings are different for me. They only become alive as they grow old. Then they begin to resemble stones and rocks, having absorbed the elements of the earth. It is almost as if a soul appears in a building.
By the way, this project for the Canton of Vaud will be called “From Léman to Jura” — Du Léman au Jura in French. The Canton of Vaud is shaped around Léman and surrounded by mountains on both sides: the Alps on one side, the Jura on the other.

And everything here comes back to the lake, to the water, to you, Léman.

That is all the good that happened this month.
Oh, no. Not all of it.

The voyage to Strasbourg.
Did see the people who live in a land at war.

Dear Léman, I dream of the war ending in an instant, just as it began.

I will go to sleep.

And in the morning, I will open the news and discover that the world has become the way it was before.
You know why I write these letters to you.

First of all, to tell myself what good things have happened.

The bad things — I find them every day anyway.
But focusing on what is good, being grateful for it — that takes gathering myself together and making an effort.

And when I read the letter again, it turns out that I am living quite a good life!

I love you.

I hope you will continue to be with me.

Your friend,

Olga

Léman,

Léman.
